Engine clicking noise - needs new engine

Anyone else had the engine making a clicking noise? Second time in two months that it has made the noise and now back in the shop.
Which Wagoneer do you have, when did you get it, when was it built? Have you determined if all the TSBs and CSBs have been done to it?

Any way to get an audio recording? When does it make the clicking noise, just sitting without being started, when it first starts and it doesn't actually start just clicks, or driving down the road or sitting at a traffic light?

First person I could find on the forum discussing a clicking noise, so more info will help us help you too. Thanks!

Sorry on the lack of info. 2022 Wagoneer III, 2,500 miles. Makes a hard clicking noise when running whether driving or not. I did get video, but the forum won't let me attach it. It started (coincidence or not?) after my husband adjusted the air suspension, which also made a clicking noise. The noise first happened two days after purchase, then stopped, but today started again pretty aggressively. The service tech said the noise was possibly the e-torque system, but they won't look at it until Monday. In the meantime, they gave me a 2019 Caravan to drive....wow, thanks for that! Wagoneer is not a luxury brand. Major buyer remorse! P.S. this happened two miles from our house as we started on our spring break holiday, which had to be canceled. Took us eight hours to get a loaner from the dealership, which we had to visit twice. Total day wasted after spending almost $90K on a vehicle

There have been a couple of Drivetrain TSBs, usually related to a grinding sound rather than clicking. Depending on when your Wagoneer was built it may not have had the fixes applied. I'm not sure if Stellantis only authorizes payment to Dealerships if the Customer reports an issue and the fix is done, or if the Dealership can apply TSBs like all other brands, when they are released and then they get paid by Stellantis when they submit the VINs. It will be interesting to see what the Dealer tells you was the solution.

As for the Caravan, certainly not in keeping with the commitment from Stellantis. I recommend opening a case with Wagoneer Client Services, no matter what, by calling them or also getting help via this forum they monitor. Using the @WagoneerCxSvc tag in a post helps alert them. Their representative(s) then reach out and ask you to Direct Message (DM) them to get their help. If you hover your mouse over that tag I just did you will see a button that says Start a Conversation. That's the DM on this forum and it is private between you and that account (usually just a member, in this case a group).

Keep us informed, and if I find anything else about clicking I'll post it here for you.

Thank you so much! Yes, this issue is likely something with the actual motor as it isn't dependent on whether the car is in motion. My father-in-law said it almost sounded like something came loose in the motor, but again, we aren't mechanics.

Appreciate the direct contact info for WCS and there is a current case open with them. They were supposedly helping to arrange a rental, but then just never called us back. We were told by the dealership that we could go rent a car today ourselves (had to be a Chrysler family product) from Enterprise and then they would pay for it and we could return the Caravan. I'm just so amazed that I need to spend another day sorting and finding a car. Isn't this WCS role? I literally just had to laugh as I drove away in the van last night. Overall, worst car buying experience ever.

Engines make variable sounds, like a clicking sound when off. Clicking sounds when running could be the lifters in the engine heads or A/C compressor—running on/off as it's cooling. Engine expansion/contractions go click, click or tick, tick sound when off. Even the muffler/exhaust system makes sounds when cooling off. Also, the radiator might have electrical fans and that too could also run when off and shuts off at a predetermined time. Maybe a fan is going. The good thing is it's in the shop, and hopefully, you get this resolved to your liking.

Minor update, WCS wouldn't help us change the loaner car. We called today, but said we had to wait until Monday for our rep to return to the office LOL. What a joke

This is not the experience we want for you and your Wagoneer! If you still need assistance or need us to update your case notes, send us a private message.

Apparently our Wagoneer needs a new engine. The cam shaft is wearing down too fast and shearing metal into the engine. WCS again didn't call us back to sort out a loaner after we chased them today, so we had had enough and traded the Wagoneer today for an Expedition. The dealer can sell it once they replace the engine. So happy to be out of Wagoneer stress and unhelpful WCS. Good luck everyone!

Forgot to mention that this is apparently a known issue as there is an alert to the dealers that this may be happening. The service tech mentioned this to us.

There were some rumblings about the 5.7L engine and the Torque system causing problems late last year (some on this forum). I hadn't seen any with such drastic results. Did you ever look in the Driver doorway and see the 'born on' date? It would be interesting to know when it was built vs. the alert date. So sorry to see the issue, good for you in taking a path that reduces your stress. It's always different for everyone's situation. Best to you, stay safe!
