Towing False Advertising. Absolutely furious.

Well, saw the website that says 10,000lbs towing (doesn't say "up to" or "available", and went and leased a series 3 4X4. Well after climbing under my car to find out that it has a 3.21 gear ratio (because it doesn't list the gear ratio on the window sticker) that it can only tow 7170 lbs from the owners manual. Nowhere does it say that online. What's crazy is that even though I have 4X4 selected and it still says 10,000lbs, based on the owners manual, you can't even have a series 3 4X4 that can have the gear ratio that can tow 10,000 lbs. How many people are buying Wagoneer's thinking they can tow 10,000 lbs and prob can only tow 7,000ish lbs!?

Hi, sounds like your Sales Person is the one you should focus on for this issue. Horrible to have done that to you when the vehicle actually does have the ability to two almost 10k.

Here are items from the actual Wagoneer website, the specific packages and the Towing Specs you can see once you do a 'Build and Compare'. Only need to build one to get the specs, save it and look at the compare page. I would hit the dealership up on this since you told them up front that is what you needed and why you were getting the lease. Unreal they would do that to you.

have to get the tow package

Either way, the vehicle is really only capable of towing 8000lbs after tongue weight and people in the vehicle. Payload is only 1500#. Tongue weight of 1,000# and you only have 500# left over for people and cargo

Appareciate that but again according to my owners manual even with the tow package, the 3.92 4x4 is not listed to tow 1,000 tongue (it’s not even on the list actuwlly). Also nowhere on the site does it say the tow package is necessary for the 10k tow limit.

Strange that towing is really important to you but you didn't ask about the towing capacity for the specific car you were buying.

Towing is important to me and I quickly learned that you need the towing package and the bigger engine to hit the 10k for the wagoneer. But I've bought trucks before specifically for towing, so I know that what they advertise is usually best case scenario and you need to double-check before writing a check. When in doubt, don't trust the salesman either, just look at the GVWR info on the driver's door jamb sticker of any vehicle.

Thank you for your advice but according to the owners manual you do not need the bigger motor. You also do not need the tow package. The website also shows 10,000 under standard equipment. Nobody has ever told me to check the GVWR rating but that is great advice. No salesman has ever mentioned that and I have recently called different jeep dealerships and the salesman all give me different answers. My point is, the correct information on this vehicle is very indifferent.

Also noticed this. According to this, my vehicle with my gear ratio and 5.7 SHOULD be able to do 10k. So what happened?

Towing capacity is complicated. The frame capacity, the equipped tires, suspension, and a ton of other factors can all change the rated towing capacity. My last truck was an F-250 diesel superduty, and still I had to lookup in a table what the towing capacity was for different applications (5th wheel or gooseneck towing vs travel trailer) when I was shopping for it to make sure it would fit my needs.

But at the end of the day what matters is what's on that sticker in the door jam, because when you get in an accident or get pulled over that's what the cop is going to check. Insurance might not even pay out and you could be found at fault if you exceed the rating, regardless of what is listed on a website or what a salesman tells you.

Totally agree with that. But if my car doesn’t tow 10,000lbs, the website shouldn’t list it. If they list 10,000lbs, it should say something like “with 6.1L and 3.29 ratio” or something. Don’t just show it without an asterisk or anything. I shouldn’t have to be a tow expert to know how to find this stuff out.

My dealer didn't know much about the vehicle and even tried to convince me the one I test drove had a 10000lb tow rating even though it didn't have the tow package. This was with a Jeep certified "Wagoneer Sales Person" or w/e they are calling it. I had to tell them 3 different ways that it needed the tow package in order to have the 10000lb tow rating. I definitely understand where you're coming from. I think I googled Wagoneer tow rating and found a chart from a review that laid it out better than anything on the Jeep website did.
