Heavy Duty Tow Package

Our wagoneer came with a receiver hitch and trailer light connections (4/7 pin option I believe). Not sure if the tow capacity is derated when not equipped with the “heavy duty” tow package or not. I plan to add a trailer brake controller if feasible.

I read the standard setup tows about 8500 lbs and the HD package brings it up to 9800. Its in the owners manual I downloaded as the dealers don't know shit. Is your brake controller operational?

I do not believe our wagoneer came with the integrated trailer brake. If so, have not seen it on the screens yet but may have missed it. Need to spend more time with the manual as well. Only had it for a few weeks now.

I agree. I suspect some of the early orders didn’t add it due to parts availability. When I ordered mine (11/22) there were concerns I wouldn’t be able to add the HD Tow Package.

While all Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers come standard with a hitch, you cannot retroactively add the HD Tow Package to an existing vehicle as it is welded onto the frame during construction. You’re looking at a towing capacity of 8,260 lbs without it versus 9,860 lbs with the package (8,450 lbs and 10,000 lbs on 4x2 models). For those wondering if you have it or not and you don’t have your build sheet or window sticker handy, look for the front tow hooks; these only come with the HD Tow Package.

Part of the Heavy Duty Tow Package is "Heavy-Duty Engine Cooling" does anyone know what's included in the "Heavy-Duty Engine Cooling"? Is it a larger radiator? Additional cooling fans? External transmission cooler? I've asked around at a few dealers but no one seems to know what is different/changed.

Not 100% sure about the application here but I know from past Ram pickups that the HD Tow Package changes the radiator (bigger, I suspect) and then the fan goes from a simple, 2 speed cooling fan to a higher capacity fan that has variable speed control. Pretty sure an aux transmission cooler is involved, too. Since this is effectively a Ram 1500 underneath I assume the Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer will be similar.

I tow quite a bit so this was a must have for me - can’t wait to try it out when I get my GW.

Also adds 3.92 rear axle ratio and brake controller

From what I understand, the extra cooling is Transmission cooler ....

Personally I rejected buying local cars without the tow package. We flew from San Jose to Minnesota to find the right package. Lots of dealers on the West Coast were adding 5k-10k premiums to the sticker price. We got ours at sticker fully loaded.
