A look into the new 2020 Jeep Wagoneer…

Originally posted on our other site, Moparinsiders.com in April 2018 by Robert S. Miller

While everyone has spent time checking out the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 (DT), many people were overlooking the fact that this is the first time the public is seeing what lies underneath the upcoming 2020 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer (WS) models.

For those who don’t know, the new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models are the upcoming full-size body-on-frame (BoF) SUVs which will be based on the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 platform.

The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 has a completely new frame compared to the outgoing model. The all-new pickup uses a longer, lighter, and more efficient frame. In fact, 98% of the entire frame was made with high strength steel. This allowed them to take about 100 pounds out of the frame alone.

Exclusive front splayed frame rails, create a highly efficient energy-absorbing structure for all front impacts. The side rails are taller and fully boxed. FCA US has also been working to further improve NVH, new electronically controlled side-frame-mounted active tuned-mass modules (ATMM).

The debut of the DT trucks, it shows us some of the new technology that will be going into new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. With the debut of the 12.1-inch Uconnect reconfigurable touchscreen display featuring split-screen capability for dual-application operation. We also hear that the WS models will get a new UConnect HUD or heads up display. This system will spread over the rest of the future FCA US portfolio as well. The new Jeeps will get motion-activated liftgate and the rear UConnect Theatre package from the Chrysler Pacifica.

Some of the yet to be confirmed, but rumored details about the upcoming (WS) models are that Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer will not be just a standard trim model and an upper trim model. Instead, Wagoneer will be a shorter wheelbase than the Grand Wagoneer. This will allow both models to compete squarely with the likes of the Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon/Yukon XL, Ford Expedition/Expedition Maxx as well as the premium plays like Lincoln Navigator/Navigator L and the Cadillac Escalade/Escalade ESV.

We heard there will also be a range of new powertrains for the upcoming (WS) models. Ranging from the 3.6L Pentastar V6 with e-Torque, 5.7L HEMI V8 with e-Torque, the 6.4L HEMI V8 from the Ram HD and the highly anticipated new inline-6. This will give customers a wide variety of powertrains to go with the trim levels that will debut on these models.

Transmissions will be standard 8-speed automatics across the board. We hear that these new SUVs will get the rotary dial shifter just like their Ram truck siblings. This will open up more center console space.

Don’t expect this to be just some luxury Jeep. There will be an off-road variant, it might be called the Trailhawk or something else. We do know it will take full advantage of the new next generation air suspension on the 2019 Ram 1500, as well the electronic-locking rear differential found on the 2019 Ram 1500 4×4 Off-Road Package and Rebel.
