Next year will be the first model year for the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline. Ford Authority says it has word from sources "familiar with the 2022 Expedition lineup" that the off-road-focused big-boy SUV will start at $66,690, plus a $1,695 destination fee, for a total of $68,385. FA says next year's luxury-focused Expedition Limited with four-wheel drive will start at $68,475. If that's true, the Limited's MSRP increases by $1,555 over the current 2021-model-year price, taking it to just $90 above next year's four-wheel-drive Timberline trim.

Cast in the mold established by the Explorer Timberline, the Expedition version wears orange accents, black wheels, and reworked bumpers. Upfront, Ford put its high-output twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 making 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. Sitting on 33-inch all-terrain tires that help provide 10.6 inches of ground clearance, Ford likes to point out that its SUV stands 0.6 inches above what the Jeep Wagoneer tops out at. If the quoted price holds steady, the Expedition undercuts the 2022 Wagoneer Series II 4x4 by $5,460 while making 48 more horses and 106 more pound-feet.

Very interesting numbers you posted RRB. I'm curious if members of this forum really see the 2022 Ford Expedition Timberline as a competitor to the Wagoneer. For me personally, when you sit in an Expedition and compare the interior and technology to the Wagoneer, which I have done, granted a 2021 Expedition, the interior, finish, and technology really feels dated compared to the Wagoner. The 48 more horses and 106 lb/ft of additional torque for me is a net-zero given that I guarantee the Expedition will still only be rated to tow 9,300 lbs. If Ford can manage to bump that up even a few hundred pounds then that would be a big win!

I feel like the Wagoneer will compete with the GMC Denali and somewhere in between the Ford Platinum / Lincoln Navigator. I'm only talking Wagoneer and obviously not the Grand Wagoneer. There will be a camp of folks that choose their 3-row full-size SUV solely based on the looks and amenities. For others that are interested in performance, I think the spec that they will be most interested in is what will it tow? Correct me if I'm wrong but I think very few people really care about the overall HP and Torque since we don't plan to drag race these beasts. But we do want to know how much we can strap to the bumper and safely pull down the freeway with our families inside.

I also don't feel like the 0.6 inches of additional ground clearance is meaningful to 99% of the target audience. I know that if an extra 1/2" was important to my wife she would have left me a long time ago! It's not how much ground clearance you have but how you use it! :)
